Lady Rams hold off Bixby

BIXBY — Two Bixby errors led to both Owasso runs as the defending Class 6A state runnerup Rams pulled out a 2-1 softball victory Monday at Spartan Field.

Owasso ran into strong pitching from Bixby’s Haley Young, a transfer from Pryor. Young did permit seven hits, two each from catcher Brooke Curtis and left fielder Kenzie Stevens, but it was the Spartans’ miscues that turned the tide toward the Rams.

In the seventh inning Stevens singled, was sacrificed to second and took third on a fielder’s choice. Nicole Nease stepped to the plate and lofted a high fly ball to left where Mariah Saggebruch failed to make the catch, allowing Stevens to score the winning run.

Owasso took a 1-0 lead in the sixth when Bixby third baseman Shala Sutter scooped up a ground ball off Whitney Whitehorn’s bat and threw low to first. Whitehorn continued to second and scored on Curtis’ double to center field.

Bixby tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Catcher Allie Alvstad doubled, went to third on Shawna Cary‘s wild pitch and slid home safely on a fielder’s choice. Cary struck out eight Spartan hitters.

The Rams, who finished 39-2 a year ago, lost just one starter from that team and moved to 2-0 for the season. They defeated Ponca City 11-0 in the season opener.
